Eczema comes in many different forms and can have different causes. If you have eczema, you can usually recognize this by the red (itchy) spots on your skin. Eczema can start out moist, with blisters on the skin. Later the skin is dry, with flakes.
If you are unsure whether you suffer from eczema, contact your GP or dermatologist.
What is eczema?
Eczema is a collective name for different types of skin conditions. You may suffer from atopic or constitutional eczema (these are the same) or, for example, seborrheic eczema (on the scalp).
With eczema, the skin barrier is disrupted, causing the skin to retain moisture less well.
The skin dries out more quickly and irritating or harmful substances can penetrate it more easily. The result: dry, itchy and often flaky skin, which is difficult to repair on its own.
Eczema can be a chronic condition. With large spots or multiple spots on the body.
Itchy skin
Scratching, scratching, scratching. Eczema causes red, dry, itchy spots on the skin. The itching can vary from slightly annoying to very noticeable.
Skin flakes, bumps, cracks or crusts are symptoms of eczema or the consequences of scratching in eczema.
The physical complaints caused by eczema can in turn cause other complaints. Consider, for example, a bad night's sleep.
Applying a nourishing cream or ointment can help keep the eczema calmer. This way you reduce complaints of itching and dry skin.
Eczema ointment or eczema cream
Due to the loss of moisture, the skin is less well protected against bacteria. The skin can become damaged more quickly and become itchy.
You can apply a protective layer to this sensitive skin with an ointment or cream. The protective layer helps restore moisture balance and strengthen the skin.
